We carry fine old Italian violins, violas, and cellos, as well as old instruments by English, French, and German makers. All our instruments, old or modern, are carefully selected and meticulously set up. All old instruments are fully restored and are in excellent conditions. We have a large selection of old and new instruments and bows. Alejandro Bacelar personally worked on each instrument or bow that is for sale to assure the structural soundness and acoustic quality of each instrument.

Our exclusive line of   violins, violas and cellos are new instruments made according to the measurement specifications and models of fine instruments. They are acquired in the United States. Each of these instruments goes through a stringent selection process, and hand picked by Alejandro Bacelar from many hundreds instruments. Alejandro Bacelar does the acoustic work and set up on these instruments, the same type of work he does on a fine rare instrument. They are high quality professional sounding instruments for advanced students and serious musicians. These instruments are the best values in the market and are played by students as well as professionals.

Alejandro is also a bowmaker, and has made many bows that are played by musicians and students across the country. Other than the bows he made, we also provide bows by famous old masters as well as modern makers.

Repairs and Restorations

Having the background as a professional musician, Alex understands the needs of professional players, and is dedicated to meeting their most demanding needs. Over the years, he has spent countless hours developing and perfecting the traditional methods of restoration and violin making. Alex Bacelar has devoted himself to the development of a unique and superior method for the tuning of instrument plates that enhances the tonal quality and projection of instruments. His work has earned him international recognition for the excellent craftsmanship and the superior acoustical results he gets on every instrument he works on.

Since the mid 80s, our shop has provided a comprehensive repair service for both instruments and bows. Alejandro Bacelar has undertaken many challenging major restorations on rare Italian instruments. Major symphony performers in the United States and abroad have called upon Mr. Bacelar's services, entrusting him with complex and difficult restorations of their rare fine instruments. They regularly come to him for sound adjustment, repair and restoration. He applies the same uncompromising standard of craftsmanship and his unique expertise in acoustic tuning, which satisfies the most demanding professional musicians, to every instrument, modern or rare, under his care. For quality control, Mr. Bacelar personally works on each instrument brought to our shop for service.

About Alex

Alejandro Bacelar, better known as "Alex", was born in Cuba. He came to United States at age 14 during the Cuban revolutionary years. Alejandro pursed his studies at four major music institutions, winning scholarships from each: the Peabody Conservatory of Music, the Mannes College of Music, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Iowa. His teachers were Lawrence Lesser, Claus Adam, Paul Tobias, Leopold Teraspulsky and Charles Wendt, respectively. Since completing his graduate studies, Alejandro Bacelar has performed extensively throughout the United States and Central America in solo and chamber music performances, as well as in numerous ballet, opera, musical theater and symphony orchestras. He has served as Principal Cellist of the Savannah Symphony (Georgia) and the Savannah String Quartet. As a cellist of "Trio Musica Hispana", based in New York City, he has presented concerts throughout United States, including concerts at the Getty Museum (Los Angeles), the Miami University International Festival, the Americas Society, Merkin Concert Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, and Lincoln Center. 

As a child, Alex was always fascinated with woodworking. He made many woodwork projects in his childhood, including his first violin at age 12. While attending graduate school, he made his own cello as well as bows, which he used professionally for many years. During the years when he was performing extensively as a cellist, he devoted considerable amount of time to studying and researching the art of violin making and restoration. In late 80s, as demands for his work increased greatly, he decided to devote himself full-time to the business of stringed instruments and established a full service shop.

I am a cellist, now retired, who was a student of Leonard Rose, started out in the Toronto Symphony, competed in the 1962 Tchaikovsky competition and briefly joined the London Symphony as I returned through England finally back to rejoin the Toronto Symphony. Moved to Montreal and subsequently joined the Montreal Symphony also taught for the Conservatoire and McGill University.

Over the years the endless search for a really good instrument was rewarded and I had two, a superior French cello and a marvelous old Italian. The French instrument needed some repair and in view of it's quality I went to the most highly reputed dealer and repair service in New York where they did many things including changing the bass bar. The result was a loud but in the lower range very thin sound quality. I was told to wait for three or four months for it to break in - it never did. Finally, years later, a friend showed me work done on his instrument including a bass bar change with no break in period, it sounded wonderful, the repairs were done by Alejandro Bacelar. Alex doesn't pretend to do mysterious things with endless measuring, he measures yes, but then he listens for resonance through whatever means possible - tapping, knocking, playing, in order to adjust and balance the instrument. If it doesn't sound like it should right away he does what the instrument needs even if it means taking the top off and redoing the bass bar or whatever. He worked on my French cello and at last it is the glorious instrument it was meant to be. My Italian cello soon followed with the same marvelous results.
